Cowboy Sam by Edna Walker Chandler and Jack Merryweather

Picture
Cowboy Sam is back! The rootin' tootin' cowboy hero of Cowboy Sam (annotated edition) and over a dozen other Cowboy Sam books by author Edna Walker Chandler has been restored and republished by Lasso Books for a new generation of big-hat-wearing, horse-wrangling youngsters.

Cowboy Sam was created especially for beginning readers who were having a hard time getting interested in the sedate activities of Sally, Dick, and Jane
.

The square-jawed rider on the range, Cowboy Sam, livened things up appreciably for a post-War generation that grew up on television Westerns. In the midst of riding, roping, and chasing off bad varmints, a lot of learning was instilled with Cowboy Sam. New vocabulary was carefully introduced as well as themes of hard work, duty, loyalty, and preservation of Mother Nature.

Young readers who checked out these books from their school libraries in the 1950s and '60s in elementary school will certainly enjoy sharing these long out-of-print books with their grandchildren today. The illustrations by Jack Merryweather are classic examples of Americana art at its best.

You will find that children today are just as mesmerized by tall tales of the wild West as you were in your youth. In these books Cowboy Sam along with his cowpoke friends and ranch animals ride again!

In Cowboy Sam and Big Bill, we go back in time to see how ranch cook Big Bill came to Cowboy Sam's ranch and how his only good dish grew tiresome enough that Big Bill had to learn some new cooking tricks.

As always, there's a moral to be found in this Cowboy Sam book—in this case how hard work and perseverance pay off—and children learn the value of the cowboy way.
