You couldn’t miss him.
He was the tall, dapper guy who so generously offered advice and encouragement to journalism students, colleagues and alumni alike.
Spielberger died suddenly Dec. 26. He was 74 and had finished the fall semester two weeks earlier. (Read the feature obituary in The Commercial Appeal.)
Devault-Graves Agency principals Darrin Devault and Tom Graves knew Spielberger from their time in the journalism program.
"He was an unforgettable presence in the department during my time there in the mid-1970s and thereafter," Graves said. "(He leaves) big shoes to fill."
Devault first came into contact with Spielberger in the mid-1980s when he was a student reporter and editor at The Daily Helmsman. Spielberger was serving as the advertising manager for the paper in those days, and it was clear he was a “student’s professor.”
"Ron was a dear friend, mentor and colleague," Devault said. "And a true mensch."
Rest easy, Ron.
